More than 20 Awards will be given - including the Grand Prize Winner - Best Film of the 2012 International Documentary Challenge.
All eligible films will be reviewed by the International Documentary Challenge judges - an independent panel of international documentary professionals. Films will be judged on both story and production values, as well as adherence to genre and effective use of the assigned theme.
Out of all of the entries, twelve "Best Films" will be named. These films will screen at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Film Festival in Toronto in April/May 2012 where the winners will be announced. Each of the 12 finalists receives two industry passes to Hot Docs (an $800 value) and an invitation to the official Doc Challenge reception at Hot Docs.
From the "Best Films" the following awards will be given:
Best Film of The Doc Challenge
- Receive $1,500 (Presented by the Documentary Channel) and a glass award
- Screen at Hot Docs
- Receive $1,500 worth of services from DocuMentors, a comprehensive on-line resource for how to make documentaries, giving insider info and tools needed to help filmmakers raise the bar of their documentary filmmaking careers. This special award includes a 1-year membership subscription, one-on-one mentoring and tutorials.
- Automatic inclusion in the next "Best of the Doc Challenge" DVD
- Free registration in the 2012 Doc Challenge
- Receive a 1 year membership to the International Documentary Association (includes a subscription to the magazine "Documentary")
American Documentary/P.O.V. Award
- Receive $1,000 and a glass award
- Screen at Hot Docs
- Film is featured on the P.O.V. website and seriously considered for a U.S. national broadcast on PBS.
Documentary Educational Resources (DER) Award
- Receive $1,000 and a glass award
- Screen at Hot Docs
- Receive distribution consultation from DER
Audience Award
The Twelve Best films will be packaged as a feature-length program and screened at film festivals and film series' across the world.

- Best Editing
- Best Cinematography
- Best Writing
- Best Soundtrack
- Best Use of Theme
To be eligible for judging, awards and prizes, the film must have been created within the competition period (8 a.m. March 1, 2012 through March 5, 2012), and must adhere to all of the Doc Challenge rules.
